Typewriter Revival: Pasadena Group Offers Analog Escape From Digital Fatigue

Workshop aims to reconnect people through mechanical keys and intentional writing
Published on Sep 18, 2025

While most of America types on glowing screens, a collective in Pasadena is gathering around vintage typewriters, seeking connection through the deliberate rhythm of mechanical keys.

Typewriters Anonymous will host its next “Analog Hangout” on Friday, Sept. 26, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Remainders Creative Space in Pasadena.

The $10 workshop, open to participants 14 and older, underscores what organizers see as growing digital exhaustion.

“People are tired of their computers and cell phones. And despite the fact that social media is so much of our lives now, people feel more disconnected than ever,” said Phillip T. Nails, co-founder of Typewriters Anonymous, explaining the inspiration behind the analog gatherings.

The workshop takes place at Remainders Creative Space, located at 787 E. Washington Blvd. Suite 101 in Pasadena. Participants can contact the venue at (626) 529-5014 for more information.

Nails’ comments, originally made in a November 2024 discussion published on the Rhizomatic Arts blog, speak to a growing analog movement that values the permanence and intentionality of typewritten text, where every keystroke matters and editing requires starting fresh.

The movement represents a tactile rebellion against digital communication, offering participants the satisfaction of mechanical keys and the irreversible commitment of ink on paper.
