[City of Pasadena]
This Saturday, the city is offering a way out. Pasadena’s Department of Public Works is hosting a free Oil Filter Exchange Event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at O’Reilly Auto Parts, 1860 E. Colorado Blvd. Residents who bring a used oil filter can walk out with a new one at no cost. Each household may exchange up to two filters, each valued at up to $15 before tax, while supplies last.
The event is organized by the Department of Public Works and funded through a grant from the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, known as CalRecycle, which supports local programs that promote responsible recycling practices, according to the city’s announcement. Greg de Vinck, the city’s Director of Public Works, extended the invitation to residents in that announcement.
Used motor oil is also accepted at the event for proper disposal. Free oil recycling kits will be distributed to attendees while supplies last.
The exchange is one of several similar events the department has held over the years at auto parts stores along Colorado Boulevard and Lake Avenue — a recurring effort to give do-it-yourself oil-changers a practical option for materials that don’t belong in the trash or down a drain.
For residents who can’t make Saturday’s event, Pasadena operates year-round used oil recycling through certified collection centers. City refuse customers can also schedule free curbside pickup of up to five one-gallon containers of used motor oil by calling the City Service Center at (626) 744-7311. More information is available at CityofPasadena.net/UsedOil.
The filter sitting in that garage bag won’t change itself. Saturday morning, at least, someone will take it.
