Watch and Learn: Repurposed Materials and Discards Create Three-Dimensional Artwork

Published on Sep 11, 2021

Remainders Creative Reuse, a Pasadena-based nonprofit creative reuse center and materials shop, is starting a series of Saturday Studio workshops on September 25, with family classes from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and workshops for vaccinated kids 12 and above from 1 to 3 p.m.

In these workshops, multidisciplinary artist Luke Davis will be using repurposed materials and discards to create three-dimensional works of art using different techniques and concepts, some decorative and others more narrative.

On September 25, Davis will take inspiration from artists who have used non-traditional art materials, such as found objects, in a spirit of experimentation. Each student will build a branch-frame and “weave” it with lengths of yarn, and optionally attach a hand-written wish for a positive future, in the spirit of Japanese tanzaku.

On October 9, students will turn up-cycled materials into their own unique marble game. This will be a hands-on exploration of design, logic, momentum and creative play.

On October 23, participants will move beyond the idea of a shadow box as a collection of objects, and instead create miniature dioramas that recall stage sets with a scenic and narrative appearance. Davis will lead the family as they work with the theme of preserving the delicate ecosystems of the oceans. The individual class is expected to be more spooky!

All supplies are recycled, up-cycled and ready to be creatively reused. Teachers at Remainders Creative Reuse are professional and experienced artists and educators, and the classes are prepared to help facilitate your creative dreams.

Space at Remainders is sanitized for each class and staff are taking all precautions to ensure the space is safe for all. No one will be turned away; scholarships are available. Just send an email to remainderspas@gmail.com.

Family classes are open for up to two adults and three children, at $25 per family. Masks are required.

Individual classes are $15 per person.
