Disney’s animated film “Encanto” is the top-grossing film over the long Thanksgiving weekend as overall box office totals are down about 45% from 2019’s holiday period, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
“Encanto,” whose story is set in Colombia, grossed $27 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, and an estimated $40.3 million for the five-day weekend beginning Wednesday, Comscore reported.
“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” slipped to second place, taking in $24.5 million Friday through Sunday and $35.2 million Wednesday through Sunday in its second week in theaters.
“House of Gucci” was third, opening with a three-day total of $14.2 million and a five-day total of $21.8 million.
“Eternals” was fourth, grossing $7.9 million for the three-day weekend in its fourth week.
It was followed by “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,” which opened with $5.2 million for the three-day weekend and $8.8 million over five days.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases for Friday-Sunday, as estimated by Comscore, were “Clifford the Big Red Dog” ($4.8 million), “King Richard” ($3.3 million), “Dune” ($2.1 million), “No Time to Die” ($1.7 million) and “Venom: Let There be Carnage” ($1.5 million).
Year-to-date box office totals are up 64.8% over 2020, as moviegoers slowly return to theaters after months of lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic. However, this year’s overall domestic gross of $142 million for the Thanksgiving weekend is down about 45% from 2019’s pre-pandemic total.
