What We’re Watching: ‘Predator: Badlands’ Opens with $40 Million to Lead Box Office

“Predator: Badlands” opened with $40 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Director Dan Trachtenberg’s reboot of the science fiction franchise, which stars Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, beat out the romantic drama “Regretting You,” which continued its strong performance by grossing $7.1 million in its third weekend in theaters, Comscore reported.

Blumhouse’s horror film “Black Phone 2” was third with $5.3 million Friday through Sunday in its fourth weekend.

“Sarah’s Oil” opened in fourth place with $4.4 million, followed by the historical drama “Nuremberg,” starring Rami Malek and Russell Crowe, which opened with $4.1 million.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Chainsaw Man” ($3.6 million), “Bugonia” ($3.5 million), “Die My Love” ($2.8 million), “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” ($2.2 million) and “Tron: Ares” ($1.8 million).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $83.1 million. The year-to-date total is $7.169 billion — up 3% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
