“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” became the highest grossing film of the pandemic era in North America this weekend, grossing another $13.2 million to lead all films in its fourth week of release, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The martial arts saga from Marvel Studios has taken in $196.4 million domestically, surpassing another Marvel film, “Black Widow,” as the biggest moneymaker since the outbreak started in March 2020 and shut down movie theaters for a while in many countries.
Universal’s version of the Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen” opened in second place with $7.5 million, Comscore reported.
“Free Guy” was third with $4.1 million Friday through Sunday in its seventh weekend at theaters in the United States and Canada.
“Candyman” was fourth with $2.5 million, followed by “Cry Macho” with $2.1 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Jungle Cruise” ($1.7 million), “Malignant” ($1.5 million), “Copshop” ($1.2 million), “Paw Patrol: The Movie” ($1.1 million) and “Love Story” ($893,765).
Overall, domestic box office totals are up 17.9% year-to-date vs. last year’s totals, according to Comscore.
