“Soul” was the most-watched program in Nielsen’s latest weekly report on viewership of streaming programming, with viewers watching 1.669 billion minutes of the Pixar computer-animated fantasy comedy-drama in the first three days it was available on Disney+.
This was the second consecutive report when a non-Netflix program topped the list of the most-watched programs on the four streaming services measured by Nielsen. The Disney+ “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” was first in the previous report, which covered Dec. 14-20.
No non-Netflix series topped the previous reports. Nielsen began releasing reports on streaming viewers on Sept. 5. The initial report covered viewing between Aug. 3-9. Nielsen also measures viewership for Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.
“The Office” was second for the second consecutive week and 17th time overall with viewers watching a series-high 1.435 billion minutes of the 192 episodes of the 2005-13 NBC comedy between Dec. 21-27.
“The Office” left Netflix Dec. 31, moving to the NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock.
“Bridgerton” was third, with viewers watching 1.204 billion minutes of the eight-episode Netflix alternate history period drama in the first three days it was available.
“The Midnight Sky” was fourth, with viewers watching 1.113 billion minutes of the George Clooney-starring science fiction film.
“The Mandalorian” dropped to fifth with viewers watching 1.024 billion minutes of its 16 episodes. It was the only other non-Netflix series in the Top 10.
There were two Christmas movies in the Top 10. The Jim Carrey-starring 2000 version of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” was sixth with 705 million minutes watched. The Netflix original, “The Christmas Chronicles 2” was ninth with 660 million minutes watched.
The Top 10 programs were “Soul”; “The Office”; “Bridgerton”; “The Midnight Sky”; “The Mandalorian”; “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”; “The Crown”; “Grey’s Anatomy”; “The Christmas Chronicles 2”; and “Criminal Minds.”
