“Toy Story 5” has kept its spot atop the box office, grossing an impressive $70 million in its second weekend in North American theaters, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Pixar’s latest edition in the saga of Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jesse and other children’s toys beat out “Supergirl,” which opened with $38 million. The DC Studios/Warner Bros. film stars Australian actress Milly Alcock in the title role.
“Obsession” continued its phenomenal run with $9.8 million in its seventh weekend in theaters, Rentrak reported.
“Jackass: Best and Last” opened with $8.4 million, followed by “Disclosure Day,” which made $8.1 million in its third week.
“Backrooms,” the low-budget horror film directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons — who turned 21 this month — made $4.3 million Friday through Sunday in its fifth week.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “Scary Movie” ($3 million), “Masters of the Universe” ($2.2 million), “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity” ($1.9 million) and “Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu” ($1.6 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $153.5 million. The year-to-date total is $4.724 billion — up 15% from the figure at this time last year, according to Rentrak.
