“Venom: The Last Dance” opened with $51 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The third film in the Marvel-based series starring Tom Hardy as the titular superhero beat out the horror sequel “Smile 2,” which slipped to $9.4 million one week after opening in first place, Comscore reported.
“Conclave,” a thriller about the selection of a new pope directed by Edward Berger, opened with $6.5 million and shared third place with “The Wild Robot,” which continues doing good business in its fifth week in theaters.
The romance “We Live in Time” followed with $4.8 million Friday through Sunday in its third weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Terrifier 3” ($4.2 million), “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” ($3.2 million), “Anora” ($867,142), “Piece by Piece” ($720,000) and “Transformers One” ($720,000).
Movie theaters faced tough competition this weekend from Halloween activities and the first two games of a highly rated World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $92 million. The year-to-date total is $6.758 billion — down 11.4% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
