Children ask questions adults don’t always know how to answer. About weather. About sound. About why the world behaves the way it does. On Saturday, that curiosity becomes the entire point of the room at Vroman’s Bookstore, where a musical storytime built around Wonder Why turns scientific explanation into something tactile, noisy, and briefly uncontainable.
The event, presented in collaboration with the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, is not a passive read-aloud masquerading as enrichment. It is structured as an experiment in attention: What happens when meteorology is taught not through diagrams but through rhythm, movement, and live sound? What happens when children are trusted to handle real answers — not euphemisms — about blue skies, thunder, rain, and rainbows?
Lisa Varchol Perron’s book is unusually direct for a picture book. Each page opens with a question children already ask and follows through with language that is lyrical but scientifically accurate, refusing the common shortcut of “just because.”
The story moves across a single day of weather, but its real subject is curiosity itself — the impulse to notice change and insist on explanation.
That sensibility carries into the musical adaptation. Conservatory musicians treat the book less as literature to be performed and more as a score to be interpreted. Sound and motion are folded into the storytelling, allowing kids to experience weather as pattern and pulse rather than abstract concept. Craft activities and creative movement are not filler; they function as release valves, keeping attention active rather than brittle.
The setting matters. Vroman’s has long functioned as Pasadena’s unofficial cultural commons, a place where authors, musicians, and families collide without ceremony. Hosting a musical science storytime here feels less like special programming and more like continuity — another instance of learning made public, social, and slightly messy.
The musical storytime takes place Saturday, Jan. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at Vroman’s Bookstore, 695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena.
