Where Neuroscience Meets the Dance Floor, a Caltech Scientist Guides Teen Girls

A free four-session program at the Jefferson Branch Library blends brain science, AI and movement

Can a computer learn to recognize a dance move? Can you measure the electrical signal in a muscle as it fires? At the Jefferson Branch Library in Pasadena, a group of teenage girls is about to find out. On Thursday, July 9, the library launches STEM from Dance, a free four-session program that fuses science, technology and choreography.

Girls remain underrepresented across many science and technology fields, and the program is designed to build confidence, critical thinking and a sense of belonging for girls in those spaces. Open to participants ages 13 to 17, the sessions are led by Jess Kanwal, a Caltech neurobiology scholar and educator who earned her doctorate at Harvard and was named a L’Oréal USA For Women in Science honoree. Her own research sits squarely at the intersection of brains and behavior.

Over four hands-on meetings, participants will explore neuroscience and machine learning through activities that include building simple artificial-intelligence tools to recognize dance moves, measuring muscle activity, and discovering how the brain and body coordinate movement while learning to dance. No prior experience with dance, neuroscience or AI is required.

The first session begins at 4 p.m. at a branch that serves as the Pasadena library system’s hub for youth services, home to a teen library and a wide STEAM collection. For girls curious about how their own minds and bodies work, it is an invitation to learn by moving.
