It closes out Movies in the Park, the Friday strand of Parks After Dark, which rotated through Villa Parke, Washington Park, Robinson Park and Grant Park across July. The program itself is broader and older than the movie nights suggest: now in its 15th season, Parks After Dark opened July 9 with a kickoff festival at Robinson Park and runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through August 14 at seven locations, with adult and youth basketball leagues, adult soccer, and Aqua Boogie Nights swim-and-music evenings alternating between Kennedy and Villa Parke pools on Saturdays through August 8.
This year’s addition is scientific. For the first time, the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department has brought Caltech scientists and engineers into the parks for hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics programming at select events. The department has not specified which events carry the Caltech component, so anyone hoping for it should call ahead.
Nearly every Parks After Dark activity is free, with registration required only for select programs and leagues. Organizers note the schedule is subject to change without notice.
Bring a blanket. The lawn at Victory Park slopes gently toward the San Gabriels, and the mountains hold light well after 7 p.m. in August.
