Works of Art, to the Eye and Ear

Published on Jun 5, 2021

Steinway Pianos in Pasadena will host a public exhibition of the company’s stunning Crown Jewel collection – an exclusive series of Steinway pianos encased in particularly fine wood veneers – beginning on Wednesday, June 9 and continuing through Thursday, June 17.

The exhibition is part of Steinway and Sons’ summer West Coast tour of the Crown Jewel collection. The tour marks a re-launch of the Steinway Crown Jewels, which were originally conceived more than two decades ago.

The 2021 Crown  Jewels feature many new exotic veneers, and the summer tour will be the first time all of these new woods will be on public exhibition, a company announcement said.

“The Crown Jewel Collection is one of the most visually stunning groups of Steinways to be launched in recent decades,” Gavin English, Co-President of Steinway and Sons Americas, said. “These are show-stopping statement pianos – hand-crafted in our New York factory with the same painstaking attention to detail that Steinway has been known for since 1853. The woods are globally sourced and must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. We’re looking forward to the West Coast summer tour and look forward to  bringing the Crown Jewels to other parts of the country in the coming months.”

The statement said each Steinway Crown Jewel is an original hand-crafted work of art.

“Crown Jewels are encased in woods from around the world that are prized for their exquisite color and grain,” the statement said. “Steinway craftspeople meticulously match the grain from one end of the piano to the other, even across the beveled edge of the lid.”

Pianos featured in the 2021 Steinway Crown Jewel Tour are Figured Sycamore, Padauk,  Macassar/White Polish Duet and Amber Wood/White Polish Duet and the newest Walnut Teague Sketch 1111, the statement said.

This re-launch of the Crown Jewel Collection also features the introduction of the highly durable Steinway DiamondGloss Finish, which provides a depth of color and sheen that makes the exotic woods even more lustrous, the company added.

Steinway and Sons have been making pianos since 1853 and Steinway pianos have set an uncompromising standard for sound, touch, beauty, and investment value. Today’s Steinway piano is the choice of nine out of 10 concert artists and is the preferred piano of countless musicians, professional and amateur, throughout the world.
