California live oak acorns nest in textured caps.
Anna’s hummingbird throats flash ruby coin-sized patches.
These natural patterns will inspire participants when artist Shagho leads the final workshop in her “Pattern Keepers: Batchelder Nature In Relief” series on Feb. 14 at Pasadena Heritage.
The three-hour “Cosmos” workshop caps a months-long exploration of early 20th-century tilemaker Ernest Batchelder’s ornamental designs.
Participants aren’t just learning craft techniques—they’re helping the Pasadena Museum of History compile a registry documenting Batchelder tile installations throughout the United States and Canada.
“This series of events is hosted to bring the community together to help Pasadena History Museum in compiling a registry of Batchelder tile installations throughout the United States and Canada, asking for assistance from the public to document for the first time the scope of the business and distribution of the tiles throughout North America,” according to the event description.
Shagho, Pasadena Heritage’s 2026 Artist in Residence, received a City of Pasadena Individual Artist Grant for the project.
The series, made possible in part by the Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission and the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division, began with a Plant Workshop in December and continued with a Bird Workshop in January.
The workshop features guest speaker Bryce Bolin, a research scientist at Eureka Scientific.
Programming includes walks to Plaza Las Fuentes, open archives sessions, and hands-on creative work translating nature’s geometries into relief designs.
