Aspiring entrepreneurs in Pasadena will have the opportunity to learn the essentials of starting a business at upcoming workshops hosted by local library branches in September and October. The free events are about “Starting a Business … What You Need to Know,” and aim to clarify the often confusing process of launching a new venture.

The workshops promise to cut through the confusion and chaos of what you need to do to start a business, according to the organizers. Participants are expected to gain a clear understanding of the legal requirements and steps that are needed during the two-hour sessions.

Two separate workshops are scheduled in Pasadena: Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Santa Catalina Branch Library, and Friday, Oct. 4 at the Lamanda Park Branch Library. Both sessions begin at 10 a.m. The workshops will address naming your business, licenses and taxes, insurance, financing sources, elements of a business plan, and marketing, according to the announcement.

Additional topics include advantages and disadvantages of legal structures, major causes of business failures, and ways to improve chances of success. The events are particularly valuable for those thinking about starting a new business or who have recently started one.

The workshops are presented by SCORE, a nonprofit organization “dedicated to helping small businesses succeed.” SCORE offers free, confidential business mentoring and training workshops to entrepreneurs at all stages of business development through its extensive network of volunteer mentors and online resources.

Dick Mader, a SCORE mentor and Board member, will lead the sessions. SCORE said Mader comes by his knowledge of starting a business first hand, having co-founded a media distribution business in Southern California with his wife in 1972.

“Dick is passionate about using American entrepreneurial opportunities to create small business successes and personal independence,” SCORE said in the event announcement. “He helps clients create a clear roadmap to start a business and guide them through the process.”

Attendees will leave with a checklist of the 17 things that prospective business owners need to think about and do to be successful at establishing your business. The tool is designed to ensure a productive session with a SCORE Mentor, the organizers said.
