
Exceptional musicians from the LA Phil will join celebrated pianist Junko Ueno Garrett for a concert of Czech classical masterpieces at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Pasadena.
The performance on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 4 to 5 p.m. at 500 E. Colorado Boulevard, will showcase works by renowned Czech composers Bohuslav Jan Martinu, David Popper, and Antonin Dvorak.
The program, titled “Third@First: Souvenirs From Prague,” will feature Martinu’s innovative Trio, Popper’s Requiem, and conclude with Dvorak’s acclaimed Quartet No. 2.
Third@First is a free concert series that FUMC holds on the third Saturday of each month.
Known for her colorful tone, poetry, expressiveness, dynamic technique and wide repertoire, Garrett began her musical journey at age three in Japan and studied at Tokyo’s prestigious Toho Gakuen School of Music.
The accomplished pianist, who holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Rice University, was selected to tour celebrating 150 years of US-Japan relations and 125 years of Brazil-Japan relations.
A Kawai Artist based in Los Angeles, Garrett serves as president of the Pasadena Chapter of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and received the Japanese Consul General’s Award for international relations.
Currently holding a faculty position at Occidental College, Garrett judges for MTNA, California Association of Professional Music Teachers, Music Teachers Association of California, Southern California Junior Bach Festival, and SouthWestern Youth Music Festival, while coaching Junior Chamber Music.
