Supporters of Five Acres traded their everyday routines for a slice of the tropics on Monday, August 24, when the nonprofit’s annual golf classic and dinner, Paradise on the Fairway, took over San Gabriel Country Club for an evening of championship golf, generous giving, and yacht rock nostalgia.
The island-inspired affair doubled as a milestone celebration, marking the 100th anniversary of Five Acres’ historic Altadena headquarters. It was a fitting way to toast a century of caring for children and families across Southern California, while raising crucial dollars to keep that mission moving forward.
The fun kicked off on the fairways, where golfers spent the afternoon chasing birdies and bragging rights. On-course contests kept the energy high, with players taking their swings at the Hole-in-One Challenge and testing their nerves at the Canon Shot Challenge experience. Opportunity drawings and a handful of playful surprises rounded out the day, giving guests plenty to talk about between holes.
As the evening crept in, the party moved to a one-of-a-kind Dinner on the Fairway. Guests strolled onto the grass to find tropical-inspired cuisine, breezy cocktails, and a festive setting that made it easy to imagine you’d been whisked away to a seaside resort.Silent auctions kept the philanthropic spirit humming, with attendees bidding generously to support Five Acres’ programs.
Then came the moment many had been waiting for. Grammy-nominated legends Ambrosia, featuring original member Joe Puerta, took the stage and delivered the kind of smooth, sun-drenched hits that defined a generation. Adding to the magic, Elliot Lurie, founder and lead singer of Looking Glass, joined the band to perform the unforgettable “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” — a moment that had guests singing along under the string lights.
The event was chaired by community leaders Ryan Trent, who served as Golf Chair, and Chris Selak, who took on Dinner Chair duties, with a dedicated volunteer committee helping bring it all together.
Established in 1888, Five Acres opened its historic Altadena headquarters on July 15, 1926. For more than a century, the organization has protected children and promoted mental well-being, providing compassionate care to more than 7,000 children and families each year across Southern California. Through the partnerships built by its Wear Your Heart outreach and education initiative, Five Acres continues to work toward a world where every child has access to essential care.
