There is no disputing that the 2021 Volkswagen Passat is a comfort-driven mid-sized sedan. From its spacious interior to the comfortable front and back seating, the Passat was made to make the daily grind a bit brighter. But if you are looking for something with the latest styling and tech features, the 2021 Passat will leave you wanting.

The last big change to the Passat was made in 2012, and although every year has seen upgrades the Passat has still fallen behind many other sedans in its class. However if a comfortable ride and plenty of legroom are what you are looking for then the Passat is a very attractive contender.

All trim levels are offered with only one engine; a turbo-charged. 2.0-liter, four cylinder (174 horses and 206 lb-feet of torque) mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is the only option available. Expect to get a respectable 24/city, 36/highway, and 28/combined mpg.

Available in three trims: S, SE, and R-Line, this review will focus on the R-Line trim. Most of the features that make the R-Line are cosmetic like sportier bodywork with gloss black exterior trim, 19-inch wheels, paddle shifters, ambient lighting, and special interior trim. A larger touchscreen with NAV along with a premium Fender audio system.

The Passat is big on interior space. Both front and backseat passengers will be happy with the all-around legroom, headroom and elbow room. The seats are cushy and comfortable and the driver will find plenty of adjustments to fit their driving style. I have always found the tech in Volkswagens a bit clunky, the Passat is no exception, everything works but it’s just not as easy as it should be.

The deep and wide trunk is a great boon to loading stuff and the 60/40 split seats add to the space and make room for longer gear.

The smooth ride of the Passat makes everyday road imperfections unnoticeable and the cabin is quiet enough to enjoy the sounds of the excellent Fender sound system. Acceleration is lackadaisical though, with a bit of a pause before the turbo takes hold. Steering is good, making the Passat easier to park in tight spaces.

Plenty of space, lots of legroom make the 2021 Passat R-Line an attractive package.
