With a complete redo for 2023, the Kia Niro sports more tech, an upgraded interior and a larger exterior. Offering three electrified versions: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric, this review will focus on the hybrid version which is the more wallet-friendly of the three offerings.

In addition to adopting a more futuristic appearance, the updated Niro has been endowed with increased dimensions. Kia has subtly extended both the overall length and wheelbase of the Niro in this latest iteration, resulting in a larger interior for both passengers and cargo. Specifically, the cargo area now boasts a roomy 22.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. The interior design has also been updated, featuring an optional dual 10.25-inch instrument panel and central touchscreen configuration.

The hybrid Niro is available in five trim levels: LX, EX, EX Touring, SX and SX Touring, this review will focus on the top-off-the-line SX Touring.

The latest iteration of the range-topping Niro model emerges as a striking blend of luxury and practicality, tailored for discerning drivers. Its exterior is distinguished by a glossy black body cladding, which seamlessly complements the satin chrome window trim, adding a touch of elegance. This aesthetic is further enhanced by the gloss black rear spoiler.

Functionality meets innovation with the inclusion of a hands-free tailgate, a feature that ensures ease of access and convenience. The interior of the SX Touring model is a sanctuary of comfort and technology. It boasts a seven-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system making great traveling music. The cabin is appointed with synthetic leather upholstery, and memory settings for the driver’s seat.

For enhanced comfort, the vehicle is equipped with a heated steering wheel, along with heated and ventilated front seats. To aid in maneuvering and safety, the vehicle features front and rear parking sensors, providing drivers with added confidence in tight spots.

A standout technological advancement is the Digital Key 2.0, a sophisticated smartphone application that allows the driver to start, lock, and unlock the vehicle remotely.

While numerous aspects of the Niro hybrid have been updated, it retains its 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine. This engine delivers 139 horsepower and is paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic trany. Although driving around town is pleasurable, gaining and passing on the highway is troublesome. However, engaging Sport mode significantly enhances the vehicle’s responsiveness, particularly during rapid acceleration or more spirited driving. Additionally, the Niro hybrid continues to excel in fuel efficiency, boasting an impressive combined fuel economy of 49 MPG.

The Niro stands out for its mannered driving behavior, offering a muted interior experience that maintains its calmness except when accelerating vigorously. In urban driving conditions, it delivers a notably enjoyable ride. Additionally, its suspension system is adeptly calibrated to smoothly navigate over road irregularities, enhancing the vehicle’s overall comfort. This makes the Niro an ideal choice for a comfortable journey back home. The seating is both comfortable and conveniently adjustable, and the inclusion of a dual-zone climate control system adds to the overall comfort.

Although the Niro has a decent turning radius it really doesn’t appreciate curvy roads. It’s a pretty light car and as such there can be a bit of shimmy and slide when hitting tight curves. Where the Niro thrives is in an urban setting with its stop and start traffic and tight parking spots.

All new for 2023, the Kia Niro SX Touring Hybrid, brings comfort and mileage.
