The Lexus RX has had great success as a comfortable, luxurious family ride, but with the addition of the F Sport trim, the RX rises to another level.

It has always been equipped with advanced tech features, including a hybrid AWD system that was ahead of its time, providing electric power to the rear wheels. With the fifth iteration, the RX500h F Sport Performance, Lexus is aiming to offer an even more thrilling driving experience.

Making it go is a 2.4-liter turbo engine paired with a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission. The DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system provides a total of 366-hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. The Performance version also features 21-inch wheels, an Adaptive Variable Suspension, improved 6-piston F Sport brakes, and Dynamic Rear Steering for enhanced performance. Expect to get 27/city, 28/highway and 27/combined MPG.

The interior feels slightly less spacious due to the F Sport seats, but rear passengers enjoy more legroom. Cargo space has also increased, making it more practical. The F Sport Performance edition includes a unique steering wheel with paddle shifters, bespoke gauge displays, and aluminum trim. The infotainment system has been relocated from the dash top to the front with manual controls at the bottom, and the touchpad controller has been discarded.

The vehicle’s dimensions are the same as before, but with over 2 inches of extra wheelbase and a wider track, it feels more stable and resembles a hatchback more than ever. Unique bumpers and added black trim accentuate the F Sport model.

When it comes to driving, it responds swiftly and assertively. However, unlike other hybrids, it doesn’t seem to rely much on pure electric power, indicating a clear focus on performance.

The F Sport Performance model, with its performance orientation, may not provide the typical, smooth RX ride. But the other models in the line-up offer the plush comfort if that is what you are looking for.

The 2023 RX 500h F Sport Performance AWD may not seem like a typical Lexus, but that’s part of its appeal.
