With an athletic demeanor and a luxury feel, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition packs a lot into a small SUV package. The CX-5 immediately captivates with its distinctive, chiseled front design. This positive impression is further enhanced upon entering the vehicle, where one is greeted by an exquisitely designed interior that surpasses its counterparts in this category. Unlike many vehicles in its class, the CX-5 offers a unique sense of adventure.

My test model was equipped with the standard 2.5-liter, four cylinder engine delivering 187 horses and 186 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic trany for quick-smooth shifts. Expect to get 24/city, 30/highway and 26/combined MPG.

Available in eight trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo and 2.5 Turbo Signature. This review will focus on the 2.5 S Carbon Edition.

The S Preferred trim of this vehicle, which is also included in the Carbon Edition, introduces several enhancements, aimed at improving both functionality and comfort. Among these improvements are an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a sunroof, and driver seat memory settings which allow for personalized adjustments. Additionally, it features a power-adjustable passenger seat and leather upholstery, elevating the overall passenger experience.

Further building on the features of the Preferred trim is the S Carbon Edition. This trim primarily focuses on cosmetic upgrades, offering a distinctive aesthetic appeal. It includes 19-inch black-painted wheels and an exclusive gray exterior paint that gives the vehicle a unique and sleek appearance. Complementing this are gloss black side mirrors and exterior trim, which compliment the car’s modern look. For the interior, the S Carbon Edition provides an option between black or red leather upholstery, allowing for a customized touch that matches the stylish exterior.

The interior of the CX-5 is designed with the driver in mind, ensuring that all controls are conveniently accessible. The front of the cabin offers ample space, providing sufficient headroom for taller individuals. However, the rear seating area might be somewhat restrictive for taller passengers.

When it comes to ride quality, the CX-5 strikes a balance between firmness and comfort. It handles bumps with ease and maintains stability without feeling overly buoyant. The vehicle efficiently absorbs road irregularities, ensuring a smooth drive. While some noise is noticeable at higher speeds, it’s not intrusive enough to disrupt conversation within the cabin.

The infotainment system of the CX-5 is user-friendly. It features a bright and visually appealing 10.25-inch display screen. Users will find the integrated navigation system straightforward to use.

The Mazda CX-5 offers an enjoyable driving experience without pushing it. Its standout features include precise steering and stable cornering, which make it ideal for road trips. Its ability to absorb rough terrains smoothly is also a plus. The CX-5 stands out in its class for this balanced blend of comfort and performance. It effectively shields passengers from road imperfections and keeps road noise to a minimum, with a suspension that strikes a perfect balance between soft and stiff. Thanks to the electrically assisted steering the CX-5 truly shines on winding roads.
