There’s a particular kind of sadness in handing back the keys to a car you know you won’t see in showrooms again. That’s how I felt after a week with the 2026 Volvo V60 Cross Country B5 AWD Ultra, the last station wagon Volvo will sell in the United States.

The long-roof shape is simply what a Volvo looks like. Baby boomers, their children and their children’s children either rode in, drove or admired these family wagons. Volvo says it’s leaving the segment because it believes American consumers prefer an SUV to a wagon.

I enjoyed every minute in my test car. Its Forest Lake paint is a deep green that looks nearly black in the shade and woodsy in the sun. With the optional 20-inch matte graphite wheels, rugged cladding and bright roof rails, the wagon looks just as at home at a trailhead as at a valet stand.

Inside, Amber Nappa leather adds warmth. The Ultra trim brings a stitched dashboard, memory seats with power lumbar, a head-up display and a shifter made of Orrefors crystal. The front seats are superb on long drives, the back seat fits adults comfortably and a panoramic sunroof fills the cabin with light.

A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with mild-hybrid help makes 247 horsepower and sends it to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. It’s brisk rather than fast, and the transmission can hesitate before downshifting when you need to pass. The raised suspension delivers a cushy ride, though the big wheels let sharper bumps through. With 7.8 inches of ground clearance and all-wheel drive, it’s ready for a dirt road to a campsite or a snowy mountain lot.

Cargo space is about 51 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, and the low load floor makes it easy to lift things in. The Google-based touchscreen is great for navigation but buries basic climate controls, and small-item storage is limited. The optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system is outstanding.

The EPA rates it at 23 mpg in the city, 31 on the highway and 26 combined.

The V60 Cross Country isn’t flashy, but it’s comfortable, roomy, beautifully finished and quietly capable. That’s what Volvo wagons have always been about. If you’ve ever wanted one, buy it now.
