Mark Cavendish wins the final stage in Visit Pasadena. Peter Sagan wins General Classification by placing 3rd and taking precious bonus time.

Slovakian Peter Sagan was crowned the new “King of California” Sunday afternoon when he won the 10th Annual 2015 Amgen Tour in Pasadena, eliminating competition with a slim 3-second margin, the tightest result in the history of the event.

“I think I was surprised by my effort,” said Sagan, 25, in response to finishing on top of the 128-man, eight-day race.

Sagan won two of the 13 stages of the nearly 700-mile course that began in Sacramento and included tours through Lodi, Pismo Beach, Big Bear Lake, downtown Los Angeles and Santa Clarita.

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe finished a close second to Sagan.

“I have had some of my best results at the Amgen Tour of California, and I want to return every year because it just gets better and better,” Sagan said.

The 2015 Amgen Tour of California also included a first of its kind three-day professional women’s cycling race on May 8 in South Lake Tahoe, as well as a women’s invitational Time Trial in Big Bear Lake on Friday.
