With over five decades in the security business, Kjell Kling has witnessed the industry’s evolution firsthand. As the president of Eagle Star Security, which has served Pasadena and the surrounding areas for 24 years, Kling sat down to share his insights on the changing landscape of residential and commercial protection.

“I have been in the security business for over 50 years,” said Kling, who started his career working for dealerships and individual companies before founding Eagle Star Security in 2000. His background includes managing three branches for American Home and training hundreds of salespeople during his 10-12 years with West Tech Security.

According to Kling, one of the most significant shifts in the industry has been the move away from traditional alarm systems, which he attributes to a staggeringly high false alarm rate. “I soon got to realize that with a 99% false alarm rate, there was very little confidence that people would have in alarm systems,” he said, noting that this led to police departments not responding properly.

This realization prompted Kling to focus on video surveillance as a more reliable alternative. “That was the main reason probably why I went into video surveillance because I realized then that there was a piece missing,” he explained. “So I wanted to make sure that in the future I would be able to provide people with the proper coverage.”

The advent of IP cameras and improved resolution has further bolstered the effectiveness of video surveillance, according to Kling. However, he emphasized that a comprehensive security approach is essential. “An alarm system is not enough to provide people with a secure feeling. So therefore you need cameras around your home to be able to ascertain where the problem is coming from and hopefully be able to get a facial description of the intruders,” he said.

Looking to the future, Kling pointed to advancements in night vision technology as a game-changer for the industry. “The new development is that we are able to provide cameras with lights at night so that it light up the whole area where the intruder is trying to get into,” he said, adding that this feature not only improves visibility but also acts as a deterrent.

While artificial intelligence (AI) is generating buzz in the security world, Kling noted that concrete applications are still in the early stages. “AI is still very new so far, we haven’t had any concrete programs come up in AI because of course they’re still being researched,” he said.

As for the business side of the equation, Kling emphasized the importance of responsive customer service and community engagement. Eagle Star Security has been a member of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce for over 20 years, participating in public functions and showcasing their products.

With plans for expansion on the horizon, Kling remains committed to his core philosophy of providing comprehensive, cutting-edge security solutions. “My personal philosophy as far as service and products are concerned, of course, are the fact that as simple alarm system, like I told you before, is not enough today, that people need better coverage to provide themselves with a good security package,” he said.

As the security landscape continues to evolve, industry veterans like Kjell Kling offer valuable insights into navigating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. For Pasadena residents and businesses, his expertise and dedication to innovation provide a reassuring presence in an ever-changing world.
