The Starbucks Foundation has awarded Hillsides, a Southern California foster care charity, a $30,000 grant for its Youth Moving On (YMO) workforce development program for transition-aged youth 16-25. The funds will be used to support workforce development services including community service and outreach efforts to help youth gain the necessary skills needed to prepare for employment.
The grant also involves local Starbucks partners (employees) and other community partners in service activities for the youth through job readiness workshops, employment resource fairs, and other volunteer opportunities.
“We are so thankful for this generous grant, which will help the youth we serve overcome the challenges of life in the foster care system to find jobs and become successful adults,” said Hillsides President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph M. Costa. “I also want to thank Starbucks for all the support it has given us over the last several years, including hosting an annual holiday toy drive, providing workforce training for our youth, and opening up jobs to our youth. We look forward to this new partnership with such a long-time, loyal supporter.”
Hillsides’ Youth Moving On Program is one of Hillsides’ five core programs. It offers a continuum of support services for transition-aged youth 16 – 25 that includes a Peer Resource drop-in center, housing services, and workforce development. Workforce development is the largest area of services offered by the Peer Resource Center. Program support includes a job readiness course, internships and vocational education. These services are designed to meet each client at their current level of job readiness and move them forward, eliminating barriers and increasing their employability.
In the past year, Starbucks supported the YMO workforce development program by leading a four-week career workshop for the youth and hiring six youth at local Starbucks stores. Its annual holiday toy drive, available in 99 San Gabriel Valley stores, raised $31,500 in gifts and toys in 2016.
The Starbucks Foundation has a long 20-year history of investing in communities around the world and supporting organizations that are working to help connect those facing barriers to jobs and education to pathways to long-term economic opportunity. The company is building on that work through the Starbucks Foundation’s first-ever Opportunity for All Grants and deepening its focus on three populations – youth, Veterans and military spouses, and refugees.
This year, Hillsides was one of 41 nonprofits in 27 U.S. cities to receive a total of $1.41 million in Opportunity for All Grants. Together, the grants are expected to directly impact more than 7,000 people.
