A troubled father of eight children died in Pasadena Friday after calling the police  himself, leading to a fatal altercation with responding officers, according to a report by KTLA.

Shainie Lindsay, who said the mother of four of the man’s children, told KTLA the man was “dysfunctional,” bipolar and has had run-ins with police before. She was present during the altercation with police.

“I woke up this morning to a bad dream,” she said to KTLA. “He called the police on himself. He wanted help.”

When officers arrived, the man was holding a knife and a fire extinguisher and did not respond to the police’s commands of putting them down because “he was out it,” Lindsay said to KTLA.

Police subsequently used a taser on him, but then he shut the door on officers, who pried it open, causing the situation to escalate, according to Lindsay.

“They was wrestling with him,” Lindsay said to KTLA. “Then, after that, they was doing CPR and then he was dead. He was a good father, and they didn’t have to kill him. He just wanted help, he didn’t want to die.”

Police have not released the details of the investigation yet.
