Chandler School’s Third Grade Bike Rodeo Pedals for Change

The third-grade bike rodeo at the Rose Bowl is a beloved P.E. tradition. Students show off their bike safety skills and mastery of the two-wheeler, which is all the more special because a few students have just been taught by Mr. Anderson how to ride a bike in the days leading up to the event.

This year, students took it even further, and raised funds for the One Bicycle Foundation, which was founded by Chandler alumni Sebouh and Shawnt Bazikian. Students took this mission to heart, since the organization provides bicycles to students around the world who have no means of getting to school other than to walk for hours. With the $1,300 that Chandler third-graders collected, the One Bicycle Foundation will send bikes to Tanzania and Kenya.

Teacher Mrs. Fernandez noted, “It’s been fantastic to take an event that we do anyway, and turn it into an amazing service-learning opportunity. We heard their presentation, and saw slides of students in Africa who received bikes in the past. Our students realized they could make a difference. They had a serious discussion afterwards, and it was their choice to go for it.”

In addition to earning a passing grade on their bike safety skills from athletic director Mr. Anderson, students also got certificates from a field deputy of LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s office.

With post-ride popsicles in hand, students reflected together. “Our class really cares about helping other people, and helping feels good.”
