College Access Plan and the Pasadena Educational Foundation Provide Summer College Prep Courses

College Access Plan (CAP), a Pasadena non-profit organization that provides comprehensive college readiness programs for Pasadena high schools and one Pasadena middle school, has teamed up with the Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF) to lead comprehensive summer courses during PEF’s Summer Enrichment Program. These courses provide middle and high school students with fundamental knowledge necessary to successfully navigate the long-term college preparation process.

CAP will provide three courses: The High School Prep course is available to 7th-9th graders and supports students’ transition to high school from middle school. This course uses hands-on, interactive activities to help students build practical study skills, set long-term goals, and to view high school as a path to college and career success.

The second course is for rising 10th and 11th graders and helps promote strong self-advocacy skills, college knowledge, and basic career readiness that includes résumé writing and interview preparation. The course helps students to stay on track for college applications and to reach their long-term goals.

Finally, CAP will offer an SAT clinic for rising 11th and 12th graders that combines proven SAT preparation approaches developed by Veritas Prep, a leader in successful SAT preparation and CAP’s exclusive SAT prep partner (veritasprep.com), and CAP’s expertise in college readiness and success. Students will delve deeply into preparing to take this standardized college entrance exam, and they will also research and identify colleges and scholarships and prepare personal essays for college admission.

College Access Plan’s Executive Director, Mo Hyman, is thrilled to welcome this new partnership. She says, “Since 2007, CAP has helped PUSD students navigate the college readiness process during the regular school year. We are excited to now support students during the summer as well, allowing us to delve deeply into those elements that are most crucial to our students’ college success.” Ellen Lewis, Program Coordinator for PEF’s Summer Enrichment Program, agrees: “Our collaboration with CAP will help us better serve our students and their families; doing together what we cannot do alone.”

The courses will be taught at Marshall Fundamental School from June 16th to July 18th. Details about course prices and financial assistance programs, enrollment, and times are available at www.pasadedfoundation.org.
