Pasadena Unified Newsflash for 6-10-13

The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) proudly congratulates the graduating Class of 2013 and the parents, teachers and faculty who guided, taught and inspired this year’s graduates.

The last day of school for students in PUSD’s 2012-2013 academic year was Thursday, June 6. The first day of school for students in the 2013-2014 academic year is Wednesday, August 14.

60 PUSD high school seniors received the California Seal of Biliteracy this year. The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school students who have demonstrated oral and written proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. The recognition encourages students to develop biliteracy skills, promotes world language learning and honors PUSD’s wealth of diverse languages.

The PUSD Board of Education appointed Mikala Rahn, Ph.D. to fill the vacant at large Seat 4 on the Board at a special meeting June 1. Dr. Rahn will be sworn in June 11 at 4 p.m. and will serve out the remainder of the current term for Seat 4, which expires on May 4, 2015. Seat 4 became vacant when Kimberly Kenne won the election for the new geographic subdistrict Seat 5 in March and vacated her previously held at large Seat 4.

The Pasadena Fire and Police Departments remind all residents and visitors that the best way to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with family and friends is by attending professional fireworks shows such as Americafest at the Rose Bowl Stadium. The sale or possession of all fireworks is illegal in Pasadena. Violators are subject to confiscation and impound of vehicles; up to one year in jail and fines up to $50,000. Call Pasadena Police at (626) 744-4241 to report illegal fireworks. Statistics show fireworks are among the most risky of consumer products. Nearly 10,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms every year and two of five people injured by fireworks are under 15 years old. The most current statistics from the National Fire Protection Association show that in 2009 more than nine out of 10, or 92 percent, of all fireworks-related injuries treated in hospitals were caused by fireworks that are allowed for consumer use by federal or state regulations. For more information about fireworks safety and enforcement, call the Pasadena Fire Department at (626) 744-7276. For information about the Americafest Fourth of July celebration, visit www.rosebowlstadium.com or call (626) 577-3101.

Sierra Madre Elementary held a ceremonial ribbon cutting June 4 for a new classroom building and preschool room. The project was funded by Measure TT, the $350 million school bond initiative approved by voters in 2008. The new buildings replace six modular buildings and serve approximately 200 students in pre-kindergarten, fourth grade and fifth grade.
