Authorities documented a single new case of COVID-19 in Pasadena on Wednesday, one day after the widespread pandemic restrictions were lifted at both the local and state levels.

No new fatalities were reported. The city’s pandemic totals stood at 11,316 COVID-19 cases and 249 deaths.

Over the prior week, Pasadena saw an average of 1.9 new infections each day, according to Pasadena Public Health Department data.

It had been more than six weeks since the daily infection count exceeded single digits.

At the regional level, county officials reported 226 new infections and five deaths on Wednesday, raising the county-wide totals to 1,246,821 cases of the virus and 24,421 fatalities.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health listed 216 COVID-19 patients hospitalized throughout the county, with 23% of them being treated in intensive care units.

As vaccination rates increase every day, L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer said it’s crucial to consider those who are not vaccinated.

“As physical distancing requirements, capacity limits, and masking mandates are now relaxed, ensuring the safety of those who are not yet vaccinated is essential.,” she said in a written statement. “Workplaces need to offer sensible precautions that reduce possible COVID-19 transmission. This can include providing unvaccinated employees with respirators and maintaining partitions to protect workers who otherwise would be in sustained close contact with others. Until we reach community immunity, public health safety measures including masking and distancing are the tools that can protect those not yet vaccinated.”

The California Department of Public Health reported 699 new infections and 19 deaths on Wednesday, bringing the state totals to 3,698,626 COVID-19 cases and 62,534 fatalities.

The statewide average positivity rate over the prior week was recorded at 0.8%, according to CDPH data.

As of Wednesday, L.A. County represented 34% of California’s COVID-19 infectious and 39% of the state’s deaths.
