Public health officials announced 13 new COVID-19 infections and added two fatalities that took place in August to the city’s official death toll.

The deaths were those of a 67-year-old woman and an 83-year-old man, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.  They were not residents of care facilities.

Conflicting information regarding the jurisdiction of their deaths was received, prompting authorities to wait for official death certificates before listing them in Pasadena city data.

Pasadena had recorded a total of 2,631 COVID-19 fatalities and 128 deaths since the onset of the pandemic in March.

Huntington Hospital reported providing treatment to 23 COVID-19 patients on Tuesday.

Public health officials at the Los Angeles County level reported 990 new cases of COVID-19 and 30 news deaths on Tuesday.

The county had recorded a total of 275,856 infections and 6,681 fatalities, in all, according to the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

County officials reported 685 COVID-19 patients hospitalized on Tuesday, with 29% of them being treated in intensive care units.

Despite improvement, the virus was still spreading through the county at an unacceptable rate, L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer said.

”While we have seen significant improvement since the summer, daily case numbers indicate COVID-19 continues to spread across L.A. County at high enough rates to limit the reopening of businesses and schools,” she said. “If we work together to limit transmission and slow the spread of COVID-19 to 700 or less new cases per day, not only will the County move to a less restrictive tier that allows us to consider additional reopenings, we will save lives.”

Under a revision to the county’s health order announced last week, indoor shopping malls will be permitted to reopen at 25% capacity on Wednesday.

The California Department of Public Health reported 1,677 new detected cases of COVID-19 and 28 additional fatalities on Tuesday, raising the statewide totals to 828,461 documented cases of the virus and 16,177 fatalities.

The average positivity rate over the prior week had dropped to 2.6%, while the 14-day average declined to 2.7%, the CDPH said in a written statement.

As of Tuesday, L.A. County accounted for 33% of California’s COVID-19 cases and 41% of the total fatalities.
