Heading into a holiday weekend a significant surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations through Los Angeles County and the state, officials say masks, social distancing and just staying home have never been more important.

The course of the virus over the weeks to come may very well depend on how well people adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines this weekend, Pasadena city spokeswomanLisa Derderian said.

The California Department of Public Health also renewed it’s message that “Your actions may save lives.

“Stay within your immediate household and enjoy the festivities without venturing out to meet and greet others,” she said.

“Don’t be that guy or girl that thinks they’re immune to spreading or catching the virus, Derderian said.

Officials both locally and regionally have noted s significant spike in COVID-19 cases among teenagers and young adults. While the virus itself is less likely to pose serious health risks to younger people, they can easily spread the virus along to vulnerable patients, such as the elderly or those with compromised immune systems,, sometimes without even realizing they are infected.

The city has recorded 1,3663 infections, in all, and 95 deaths.
