19 COVID-19 Infections Reported in Pasadena on Thursday, Including 6 in a Single Family

Officials on Thursday reported 19 new COVID-19 infections in Pasadena, including six cases stemming from one household.

No additional fatalities were reported, placing the city’s total detected infections at 2,599 and total deaths at 124.

City officials announced that outdoor playgrounds would reopen Friday, after state and county health officials gave the go-ahead for municipalities to do so at their own discretion.

Masks will be required for everyone age 2 and older, and people from different households must keep six feet apart by caregivers, city officials said in a written statement.

No eating or drinking will be allowed at playgrounds, and seniors or those with medical problems were urged to not attend when others are present.

“Consider coming on different times or days to avoid wait times and potential crowded times,” the statement said. Signage indicating pandemic precautions will be posted.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced dates at which several sectors of businesses within their jurisdiction may reopen at limited capacity, but the guidelines do not affect Pasadena, where the Pasadena Public Health Department has yet to modify its own public health order. The county has also begun reviewing waivers to reopen schools for students in pre-kindergarten through second grade, while Pasadena officials have not followed suit.

Nail salons were approved to reopen Thursday at 25 percent capacity, while card rooms were cleared to resume outdoor-only operations on Monday and indoor shopping malls will be permitted to reopen, with the exception of food courts and common areas, at 25 percent capacity on Wednesday, the L.A. County Department of Public Health said in a written statement.

“Public Health is consulting with County Counsel to determine the process and date for reopening outdoor operations at breweries and wineries serving a meal,” according to the statement. “We anticipate this process will be completed in a week.”

County officials reported 1,148 new infections and 35 new deaths on Thursday. L.A. County had seen a total of 271,371 COVID-19 infections and 6,610 deaths.

Just under 750 patients were being treated for the virus at L.A. County Hospitals, with 27 percent of them in intensive care units, officials said.

L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer said that as more places reopen, it becomes even more important that everyone complies with safety protocols.

“As more sectors reopen and more students attend in-person classes in L.A. County, we must be sure that every business or sector that is re-opening complies with 100 percent of the safety directives,” she said. “If the new reopenings result in increased community transmission, our recovery journey may need to slow down.”

Authorities at the state level announced 3,062 new detected cases of COVID-19 and 96 new deaths, raising California’s totals to 813,687 infections and 15,988 deaths.

The seven-day average positivity rate and the 14-day average positivity rate in the state were both at 2.8 percent, the California Department of Public Health said in a written statement.

As of Thursday, L.A. County represented 33 percent of California’s total COVID-19 infections and 41 percent of the state’s fatalities.
