2022 Campaign Season for City Council Underway

The local election season for City Council seats in districts 3, 5 and 7 kicked off on Monday with a candidate workshop led by City Clerk Mark Jomsky.

An additional workshop will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Appointments are also available by contacting cityclerk@cityofpasadena.net.

Candidates must pull papers and begin collecting signatures to qualify for the election.

Potential District 7 and District 3 candidates Jason Lyon and Brandon Lamar attended the meeting.

Currently John Kennedy and Jess Rivas hold seats in districts 3 and 5, respectively. District 7 Councilmember Andy Wilson has announced he will not seek re-election.

Candidates are required to circulate nomination petitions to gather signatures of registered voters in order to have their names placed on the June 7 ballot.

This is the second local election since the city moved its elections to correspond with state elections in compliance with the California Voters Participation Act (CVPA). Cities complied with the call to move local elections, which was designed to increase voter turnout. As a result of the change, the city no longer conducts its own elections.

In the first election where campaigning was impacted by COVID-19, more than 81% of Pasadena’s registered voters cast ballots in November’s General Election, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar/County Clerk’s Office.

All told, 74,290 of 91,498 registered voters, or 81.18%, cast ballots.

Election information is available online or by calling the Office of the City Clerk at (626) 744-4124 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday. The webpage will be updated periodically with candidate nomination information.

If you need to register to vote or check your registration status, visit www.registertovote.ca.gov. Voter registration information is also available in person at City Hall, public libraries, and post offices.
