The rate of new COVID-19 infections in Pasadena has remained relatively stable over the past three weeks, with 54 cases reported on Saturday and Sunday, as well as another 29 cases on Monday, according to public health officials.

Pasadena’s average number of daily infections over the prior week was recorded at 28.6, according to Pasadena Public Health Department data. The weekly rate has remained near 30 since the start of the month.

No new deaths were reported over the weekend. Pasadena’s pandemic totals stood at 12,571 confirmed infections. Public health records list 354 associated fatalities.

As of Sunday, Huntington Hospital reported treating 36 COVID-19 patients, with 12 of those people being treated in intensive care units.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced 2.331 new infections and seven new deaths, but reminded the public that reporting figures tend to lag over weekends.

The new figures raised the county’s totals to 1,385,505 COVID-19 infections and 25,078 deaths.

Officials said 1,722 patients were hospitalized with the virus countywide.

“Today’s test positivity rate is 2.8%, a slight decrease from last week’s same-day rate of 3.4%,” the L.A. County Department of Public Health said in a written statement.

L.A. County Public Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis reiterated the agency’s plea for everyone to get vaccinated, hours after the Pfizer vaccine formulation received full federal approval for those 16 and older. Until then, the Pfizer vaccine, and the others, have been available due to an emergency use authorization.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and remains the most powerful tool we have to both lower our risk of infection and protect against serious illness and death from COVID-19 if infected. The other tools to help reduce and prevent transmission are wearing a mask, keeping your distance, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, and washing your hands frequently,” Davis said..

“We are grateful to the many scientists and researchers who have worked tirelessly to develop and evaluate the vaccines during the most challenging public health crisis of our lifetime,” Davis said. “We are also grateful to the FDA for their thoughtful analyses and review processes to ensure that we can have the highest confidence that the vaccine is safe and effective. I hope the milestone of this vaccine’s full approval gives those that were waiting to get vaccinated the confidence to now take this important step.”

At the state level, the California Department of Public Health reported 10,274 new infections and listed three fatalities, bringing the pandemic totals to 4,123,250 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 64,677 deaths.

The state’s weekly positivity rate was measured at 5.4%, according to CDPH data.

As of Monday, L.A. County represented 34% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 39% of the state’s fatalities.
