If you’re serious about cafe culture, you’ll have a sweet spot for Pasadena’s newest bakery. Vanilla Bake Shop is a charming blend of sweet and savory fare plus Stumptown coffee. Stop by for cupcakes, doughnuts, macarons, cookies, cakes, sandwiches or toast.

Vanilla Bake Shop opened ten years ago and already has one location in Santa Monica. Their Pasadena branch emphasizes more cafe-style fare. Their trendy toast bar offers Smashed Avocado Toast, Deviled Egg Toast and Cinnamon Sugar Toast among other options whiles their new sandwich menu includes a Croissant Breakfast Sandwich and Tomato Mozzarella on ciabatta as well as other choices.

Amy and her husband, Jeremy, own Vanilla Bake Shop and infuse each dessert with care and love. Jeremy is especially fond of the doughnuts, which are filled with homemade jams and include flavors like Passionfruit and Sea Salt Maple. There are also gluten-free cookie and cupcake options plus a few vegan choices.

Vanilla Bake Shop’s evolves with the seasons and features holiday items like a Bailey’s Irish Cream cupcake for St. Patrick’s Day. These seasonal cake flavors are also infused into their gourmet coffee drinks though housemade syrups.

All their baked goods are made with Madagascar Bourbon pure vanilla which comes from the Bourbon Islands off the coast of Africa and has an uniquely velvety taste. Look for the vanilla bean flecks in their vanilla buttercream frostings and other desserts.

Amy got her start baking as a teenager when she was grounded and unable to watch TV or talk on the phone. These baking experiments grew into a love of cooking and she later attended Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Pasadena. Since then, she has focused on bakery items as well as wedding cakes and event catering. Vanilla Bake Shop is decorated to reflect the history of the 1914 building and has playful pops of teal green throughout.

“We want people to come, hang out, study and meet up,” said Amy Berman, co-owner of Vanilla Bake Shop. “It’s a real community place.”

Vanilla Bakeshop is located at 88 East Colorado Boulevard. Call (323) 204-4075 or visit www.vanillabakeshop.com.
