Tributes and remembrances were underway across Pasadena early Saturday as the city reflects on the lives lost on the 9/11 terrorist attacks that took place 20 years earlier.
All city flags will fly at half-staff throughout the day, city officials said.
A brief sunrise commemoration ceremony at 6:30 a.m. unfolded at the Tournament of Roses’ Tournament House, 391 S. Orange Grove Ave., according to the organization.
“Today we commend the heroic actions and courage of the rescue workers, firefighters, police officers and military personal who worked tirelessly at Ground Zero,” 2022 Pasadena Tournament of Roses President Bob Miller said before the flag was raised to half-staff outside Tournament House in honor of 9/11 victims.
Pasadena Police Chief John Perez and Fire Chief Chad Augustin attended the ceremony.
The Blair High School Army JROTC Color Guard under the command of First Sergeant Ben Hicks served as color guard.
Another remembrance occurred at 6:45 a.m. at Pasadena’s Fire Station 31, 135 S. Fair Oaks Ave., according to the Pasadena Fire Department.
Police and fire officials planned a brief reflection, during which city emergency dispatchers played a radio message as part of the ceremony.
At the Pasadena Senior Center, a flag pole is to be rededicated in honor of 9/11 victims after being vandalized in February of 2020.
Firefighters will use a ladder truck to install the pole’s new pole and the American Legion’s Post 13 in Pasadena is scheduled to present the facility with a new flag.
The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly Street.
