The Pasadena Police Department’s No Shave November or “Movember” campaign is about setting aside razors for 30 days and mustaches grow wild and free to draw attention to men’s physical and mental health issues.

“Similar to last year, we are partnering with the Movember Foundation to ‘change the face of men’s health,’” said Pasadena police Corporal Cristian Allen.. “The Movember Foundation exists to help men live happier, healthier, and longer lives by drawing awareness and raising money for mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.”

This year, the Police Department is aiming to raise $10,000, almost double the amount the Department was able to raise last year in support of the Movember Foundation.

The Movember Foundation began in Australia in 2003 as a campaign to promote awareness about men’s health and prostate cancer. Two friends from Melbourne thought about growing their mustaches back, and added a challenge for other men to grow theirs, too.

The next year, the two men – Travis Garone and Luke Slattery – and the first 30 guys who took up the mustache-growing challenge decided to formalize the concept, set up November as the activity month, registered a company and created a website. In 2006, the Movember Foundation was set up to expand the reach of the campaign. The founders also started using the official tagline: Changing the face of men’s health.

In 2007, the Movember Foundation’s campaign was launched in Los Angeles and in Canada. Today, Movember is in place in at least 21 countries and has broadened to four key men’s health issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

Like it did last year, the Pasadena Police Department is partnering with the Movember Foundation to raise funds for the movement.

“According to Movember Foundation’s website, we lose a man to suicide every minute of every day. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men over the age of 45, and testicular cancer is the #1 cancer in young men,” Corporal Allen said. “Department members will participate in this campaign by donating to the Movember Foundation while also trying to grow the best mustache and/or beard they can.”

The Police Department said it will need the community’s help in being able to raise enough funds to contribute to the global Movember Foundation campaign.

This year the police department is aiming to raise $10,000. This is almost double what we were able to raise last year, and we cannot do it alone. We need the community’s help to reach and hopefully surpass this lofty goal,” Allen said. “We will be posting to our social media platforms periodically to show the progress our officers are making as well as the progress towards our goal.”
