We Get Letters: Keep the Water

One of the best parts of Hahamongna and Devil’s Gate dam is the return of the ducks and geese when there is water.  The area is unique and enjoyed by many members of the local community.  After the storm in early November, there were as many as 30 geese and 60 ducks, and great white herons.  People enjoy watching the birds and it is a special treat for a family hike with children.

On the day before Thanksgiving, all the water was let out — all at once.  I thought that the agreement with the County was to retain the water until July.

Many of us were greatly disappointed to see the water discharged.  In fact, I met two groups that came to the dam to specifically watch the birds with binoculars.

There is a chance of rain this coming week and many of us hope the water will be retained and the ducks and geese will return.

Also, when the basin dries out, there is a dust problem for the local people and those who enjoy recreating there.
