After Samsung Settlement, Caltech “Potential Settlement” with Apple and Broadcom Appears Likely

Apple and Broadcom appear to have reached a “potential settlement” in the patent infringement case filed against them by Caltech in 2016, Reuters reported.

Caltech sued Apple and Broadcom in 2016 for using Wi-Fi chips that allegedly infringe on the university’s patents.

The lawsuit also targets Broadcom, which creates the Wi-Fi chips used in the iPhone, MacBook, and other Apple products.

A jury ordered Apple to pay $837.8 million and Broadcom to pay $270.2 million in patent-infringement damages in 2020.

A U.S. appeals court however overturned the decision and ordered a new trial on damages, as it found that the amount was “legally unsupportable.”

The trial was supposed to begin in June 2023 but it was postponed indefinitely in May.

Earlier this August, it was reported that Caltech already settled a related lawsuit against Samsung.

Caltech has also filed related lawsuits against Microsoft, Dell, and HP over the same patents, with those cases still ongoing.
