All Saints Church in Pasadena Hosts Weekend Event Honoring Female Pioneers in the Episcopal Church

All Saints Church in Pasadena, California, is set to host a two-day event celebrating the history of women in the Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17, 2024.

The Women’s History Weekend will kick off on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with a free screening of the award-winning documentary “The Philadelphia Eleven.” This film pays tribute to the eleven women who became the first female priests in the Episcopal Church in 1974. A gathering for reflection and conversation will follow the screening, along with a festive reception. Attendees are requested to register for the event.

The church will celebrate ‘Women’s History Sunday’ on Sunday, March 17, the Fifth Sunday in Lent. The day will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a sermon by Susan Russell. At 10:00 a.m., a Festive Holy Eucharist will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Ordination of the Philadelphia Eleven. The Reverend Canon Nan Peete, the first woman of African descent ordained in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, will preach, and the Reverend Canon Lynn Jay will preside. The Canterbury Choir will perform “Soon I Will Be Done” by Dawson, and ASL interpretation will be available.

At 9:00 a.m. in the Forum, Susan Russell will lead a multi-media conversation titled “How What We Learn from 1974 Prepares Us for 2024”. After the service, attendees are invited to visit the Women’s History Month archive display in the Guild Room and join for food and fellowship on the lawn.

Susan Russell, a Senior Associate for Communications at All Saints Church, is known for her advocacy for LGBTQ and women’s issues.
