Jay Zapata, who served as president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pasadena Foothills Chapter from December 2018 to December 2019, has been selected to receive the AIA’s prestigious Young Architects Award for 2024, an acknowledgment of his unwavering commitment to advocacy and impactful work within the architectural community.

Last week, Zapata posted this message on his LinkedIn page: “Truly an honor to be part of this distinguished group of architects. Thank you the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for the recognition and AIA Pasadena & Foothill for all your support over the past decade.”

Born and raised in Panama City, Latin America, Zapata acquired a passion for architecture during his childhood years as he accompanied his father to construction sites and saw the intricate collaboration of multiple trades toward a shared vision. He was educated at the Universidad de Panama and obtained a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 2009.

He started working as an architect in Panama City and immigrated to Los Angeles in 2010, obtaining a LEED AP BD+C certification in April 2012. The certification is a specialty credential for professionals who are involved in the design and construction of green buildings. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, AP stands for Accredited Professional, and BD+C stands for Building Design and Construction.

Jay Zapata became a licensed architect in the State of California in March 2015.

Zapata’s dedication to the profession and advocacy for immigrant designers led him to assume pivotal roles within the AIA Pasadena & Foothill Chapter, where he served as Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs, Executive Director, and ultimately as Chapter President in 2019.

During his tenure at the Pasadena Foothills Chapter, Zapata orchestrated a surge in participation across chapter programs, securing grants that expanded community outreach and positioning architects as leaders in addressing neighborhood compatibility, design, and public safety issues. His foresight and leadership were particularly notable during California’s cannabis industry opening, where he spearheaded successful public forums.

Zapata founded his San Gabriel-based firm, Zprout Architecture, in 2015. The company specializes in multifamily developments, commercial architecture, and federally funded projects, reflecting his commitment to innovative design solutions and community impact.

Zapata also actively volunteered with Pasadena Heritage during his time in Pasadena, showing his dedication to preserving cultural heritage and sustainable architectural practices.

Zapata and other awardees will be honored at the upcoming American Institute of Architects Awards Gala on June 7 in the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
