Assistance League of Pasadena Donates School Supplies to Kids at Boys and Girls Club

As part of its School Supplies for Success Program, the Assistance League of Pasadena (ALP) has donated basic school supplies to children at the Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena.

During the fall term, the local Boys and Girls Club will be hosting 100 children at their Mackenzie-Scott Clubhouse, located in Northwest Pasadena, and 100 children at their Slavik Clubhouse, located in Southeast Pasadena. The children are ages 6 to 17.

To ensure the health and safety of the children and staff, the club has reduced the number of children in each clubhouse.

Operating during school hours, clubhouse staff will assist children with school work and provide help with their homework. The club also offers enrichment activities, such as art and physical fitness, during the school day, said ALP volunteer Michelle Chino.

For their part, the children will do online learning through their respective schools. The Boys and Girls Club will offer free WiFi and assist kids with getting online and understanding the work assigned to them. Club staff will also offer support with online learning, but ALP volunteers point out club staff members are not surrogates for a child’s teacher.

In addition, children will have access to “in-person” learning or learning in a way in which kids will be around adults and other children in an educational environment.

As part of the program, the Assistance League of Pasadena has donated: No. 2 pencils, ballpoint pens, erasers, colored pencils, highlighters, two-pocket folders, and college- and wide-ruled spiral notebooks.

“By providing these needed school supplies, Assistance League members hope to help students start this school year with many of the tools they need to be successful,” said ALP volunteer Lynne Young.

In 2019 and 2020, 130 ALP members contributed 12,300 hours to serve nearly 4,800 children and adults in the Pasadena area.
