Bear Struck and Killed By Motorist on New York Drive Wednesday Night

Pasadena police confirmed a bear was struck by a vehicle in the roadway near the intersection of New York Drive and Eaton Canyon Drive about 8:35 p.m. Wednesday. The bear died at the scene.

The motorist complained of pain but there are no reports she was transported to a hospital. Her car sustained collision damage.

The driver was a 70-year-old Sierra Madre woman, according to authorities.

Pasadena police Lt. Anthony Burgess said that as of 6:30 a.m. Thursday the bear’s body remained in the center divider, covered by a tarp, awaiting removal by Pasadena Humane.

  • This is heartbreaking,, we saw that bear cross right in front of us, we slowed of course, but it must have turned back the way it came, as it was hit a few minutes later. I’m glad the driver is ok, but that road is a freeway, and they need animal crossing signs now! Poor bear, it looked terrified as we passed it on the hill side of the road.
