Bi-Lingual ‘IT Cafe’ Will Help Seniors Stay Connected With Their Families and the World

Nonprofit Pasadena Village is hosting a free IT cafe for senior citizens who need assistance with their laptops, smartphones or other devices on Saturday, August 12 from 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Katie Brandon, Executive director Pasadena Village said the event aims to help seniors connect with members of their family and community by helping them with technology.

Student volunteers from ATM (Ayuda Técnica para Mayores), who are skilled in computer science and bilingual communication, will offer one-on-one support to older adults in English and Spanish during the event, which will take place at Pasadena Village’s office at 236 West Mountain Streeet, #104.

“We see an incredible need amongst older adults to stay connected. And one of the main ways many people do that is through use of technology, whether it’s their smartphone, tablets or computers,” Brandon told Pasadena Now.

“So this IT cafe is a way to help people stay connected with their family, their friends with the community, and the many offerings and resources that are available with a little less frustration if they can learn how to use technology in a more effective way or get their questions answered in a positive way.”

Brandon believes that the event will  help older adults remain independent and stay active and engaged in their community.

“This is so critical to help fight isolation, which is key to what Pasadena Village does.”

According to Brandon, those who will attend should bring whatever device they have questions about. The nonprofit will provide listening or magnifying aids to those who might need them.

The upcoming event is Pasadena Village’s third  IT cafe with the ATM volunteers.

Walk-ins are welcome at the event but registration is encouraged.

Those who are interested can call Pasadena Village at (626) 765-6037 or register for a time slot through its website.

Pasadena Village is an intentional community of adults over 55 who support each other while living independently in their homes. For more information about the nonprofit, visit: https://www.pasadenavillage.org/pages/10033-our-organization
