Tech Spanish instructor Carolina Schmeisser was recently featured on Telemundo for her volunteer efforts teaching local adults. Ms. Schmeisser is working with the Universidad de Colima en Los Ángeles to help area residents complete their primary or secondary education from México.

With sponsorship by the Consulado General de México en Los Ángeles, this unique program aims to assist immigrants in completing their education, from building basic skills in reading and writing in Spanish, to assisting those who did not have the opportunity to finish high school so they can now earn the Méxican equivalent of a GED (adult high school diploma). The program is free for participants and the highly qualified instructors, like Ms. Schmeisser, are donating their time to help those in need of this valuable service.

“As an educator, I consider that every human being should have the opportunity to study and reach their dreams, especially in the United States,” she says. “If I can share my knowledge with those people who need me, not only am I helping them through my efforts, but I am sending a message to the next generation of students, and to the community, that the education is very important. Seeing the faces of the people being helped makes me feel very motivated and happy.”

In addition to appearing on TV, Ms. Schmeisser was interviewed by the Spanish language paper La Opinión and featured in the November 9 cover story article titled “Estudios al alcance” (Education accessible for all). The diplomas earned by individuals who complete the secondary, or high school level, work are issued through the Secretaría de Educación Pública de México (Department of Education of México).
