Pasadena Police Arrest Suspect Wanted by LAPD in String of Hot Prowl Attacks, Sexual Assaults

The Los Angeles Police Department in a Thursday press conference announced the arrest by Pasadena police of a suspect in a series of residential burglaries and assaults in Los Angeles that includes attempted rape, said Lt. Vasken Gourdikian of the Pasadena Police Department.

The suspect had been dubbed “The Virgin Mary Bandit” because of the design of a T-shirt he was seen wearing in a surveillance video.

The suspect, 34-year-old Russell Harris, was arrested by Pasadena police on August 6 after officers responded about 3 p.m. to a report of an individual knocking on doors and peering into windows in the 1800 block of E. Mountain in Pasadena.
When they arrived, Pasadena officers saw a man who fled from them, hopping over fences.
The suspect broke his leg during the pursuit, Gourdikian said.
Pasadena police arrested and charged him with misdemeanor evading or resisting arrest, and trespassing.
Harris, who is wanted in New York on a parole violation for residential burglary, was tracked down by LAPD and found to already be in custody when they received a tip from the public after holding a news conference last Tuesday regarding the case.
In the case, LAPD was searching for a hot prowler they believe responsible for eight attacks, including two attempted rapes, in which women who were alone in apartment buildings in the the Echo Park, Downtown, East Hollywood and Silver Lake/Sunset area appeared to be targeted, according to a report on KTLA 5.

The LA attacks began on August 1, with four attacks on the same day.

On Tuesday, LAPD announced a $35,000 reward at their news conference for information leading to the identity, arrest, and conviction of a suspect.

A lead from the public provided LAPD with a name to run in a database search. It was at that time, they discovered that the name matched a man already in custody following the Pasadena arrest.
