Two Pasadena Fire Department trucks were called out to an incident in which water from a broken pipe flooded the 99 Cents Only Store at 442 N. Los Robles Ave.

Firefighters worked to clear out the water and tried to salvage merchandise.

According to city Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian, the flooding was caused when a sprinkler pipe broke in the ceiling. It took several hours to complete the salvage operation.

The site is the location of a proposed housing project that would have included 227 units and 4,500 square feet of commercial space.

Local residents pushed back against the project, and the City Council expressed concerns over the height of the 67-foot high structure during a pre-development plan.

The building would have been two times taller than any other structure in the neighborhood, and three times denser.

The developer wanted to construct a planned development, which would have allowed modification of zoning codes to allow a “particular mix of uses, appearance, land use compatibility or special sensitivity to neighborhood character,” according to a July 22 staff report.

The project would have included 365 parking spaces, with two lots underground. The developer withdrew plans for the project in May.

The city has approved fewer than 30 planned developments, including projects at Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Huntington Hospital.

A dental office would have also been demolished to make way for the housing project.
