Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority (BGPAA) Commissioners voted to move forward with the design concept known as “The Icon” for the replacement passenger terminal, marking another major milestone in the development of Elevate BUR. The new 355,000 square foot facility, located in the northeast quadrant of Hollywood Burbank Airport, will have 14 gates and will address long-standing safety and accessibility issues with the current terminal.

“The Commission looked at what would be a ‘statement of arrival’,” said Emily Gabel-Luddy, Burbank Commissioner and President of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority. “‘The Icon’ affords that statement with its roofline and its deep shadow-giving cover over the plaza and arrival point, but also how it goes across the face of the parking structure.”

Commissioner and former Pasadena Councilmember Andy Wilson told Pasadena Now that Tuesday’s decision was an important milestone in the $1.3 billion development of the Burbank Airport Replacement Passenger Terminal project.

“We believe the selected design approach the ‘Icon’ will retain the incredible user-friendliness of the current facility while providing a bold future-looking appearance that will more effectively meet the evolving needs of the traveling public,” Wilson said.

“The Authority greatly appreciated the input of over 400 interested citizens who expressed a preference for the selected design.”

“The Icon” was one of three concepts presented to the Commission for consideration. Commissioners weighed comments from a public survey, feedback from design charrettes, and guidelines of the development agreement with the City of Burbank before making their decision. The design concepts were generated by Corgan, the architectural services provider for the project. Jacobs Project Management is providing project management services, and Holder, Pankow, TEC, Joint Venture (HPTJV) is the project’s design build team.

Voters in the City of Burbank approved the replacement terminal in 2016. “It is a credit to the observations, questions and challenges put forth by our Commissioners that this important step of our new replacement passenger terminal was unanimously taken today,” said Gabel-Luddy. “The project management and design team were equally responsive.”

During Tuesday’s meeting, Executive Director Frank Miller shared a statement regarding the Ninth Circuit Court decision and the construction noise issue: “The Authority is aware of the Ninth Circuit Court decision and no construction will commence until the FAA complies with the decision regarding the construction noise issue and in any event, construction is not scheduled to commence until Spring 2024.”
