Caltech Installing State-of-the-Art Artificial Turf Athletic Field

Caltech and the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation have announced a project to install a state-of-the-art artificial turf field to upgrade the current North Field, with work set to begin in late August.

The new high-quality turf field will include a regulation college soccer field and baseball diamond, upon which the intercollegiate baseball, men’s soccer and new women’s soccer programs will compete in addition to club, intramural and physical education groups which currently have limited access to the grass field.

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of December, in time for baseball to begin the 2017 season.

Replacing the existing grass field with artificial Field Turf will improve the consistency of the surface, expand access to all members of the Caltech community and reduce water consumption, consistent with the Institute’s efforts at improved sustainability. The uneven grass surface has limited quality and safety of play as well as access. Grass fields require a significant quantity of water to maintain properly in addition to careful management to prevent overuse, even necessitating a full resting period every two to three years. Turf fields, meanwhile, have a life span of more than 10 years under reasonable use and are considerably more durable.
